The elderly man, identified as Mzee Odhiambo, narrated that he made the life-changing decision many years ago after facing painful experiences that pushed him into isolation.
According to the elderly villager, life had become unbearable after losing close family members and enduring years of emotional suffering.
Speaking calmly while seated near the entrance of the rocky shelter he now calls home, the elderly man explained that the cave had become his sanctuary, protecting him from what he described as “the noise and pain of the world.”
“I have lived here for many years. People think I am suffering, but this place gave me peace when I had nowhere else to go,” he said.
The cave, located near a rocky hill surrounded by thick vegetation, contains only basic belongings. Inside are a few cooking utensils, blankets, traditional tools, and carefully arranged containers used for storing water and food.
Villagers say they occasionally bring him food and check on him, though he prefers to spend most of his days alone. Many have grown accustomed to his lifestyle, even though newcomers often find it unbelievable.
“He rarely asks for help. He survives through small farming nearby and support from kind neighbours. We have known him for years,” said one resident.
What has stunned many people most, however, is the elderly man’s admission that he has already dug his own grave.
According to him, old age has taught him to prepare for the inevitable.
