The man, identified only as Peter to protect his identity, had spent months struggling to provide for his wife and children after losing his casual construction job in Nairobi.
With mounting bills, unpaid rent, and school fees piling up, life had become unbearable for the father, who says he was trying everything possible to keep his family afloat.
According to Peter, things seemed to finally be looking up when an old friend contacted him with what sounded like a life-changing opportunity.
“My friend called me and told me there was a construction job in Molo. He said workers were urgently needed and that I would start immediately after arriving. I believed him because we had known each other for years,” Peter explained.
Excited by the possibility of employment, Peter borrowed money from relatives and neighbors to cater for transport costs. He believed the opportunity would finally help him restore dignity in his home and support his children.
“I did not even hesitate. My children needed food, and I had no money left. I borrowed bus fare because I believed this was my chance to start again,” he said painfully.
After arriving in Molo, however, reality hit him harder than expected.
Peter claims he tried calling the friend who had invited him, but his phone repeatedly went unanswered. At first, he thought there was a network problem or perhaps his friend was busy at work. Hours later, concern slowly turned into fear.
“I called him more than twenty times. The phone rang at first, then later it went off completely. Since then, he has never answered me,” he said.
Left stranded in an unfamiliar town with barely any money in his pocket, Peter says he spent his first night sleeping at a shopping center after failing to secure accommodation.
