New Life Prayer Centre and Church founder, Apostle Ezekiel Odero, has faced backlash from Kenyans after claiming he narrowly escaped death in the Diani plane crash that killed 11 people on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
During a church service held on Thursday, October 30, in Kilifi County, Pastor Ezekiel told his congregation that he had booked a flight from Mombasa to Nairobi on the same day the tragic accident happened.
He said that while praying at midnight, he received a divine warning not to use the plane.
“I was supposed to travel to Nairobi using that aircraft. I had even bought the tickets, but God showed me in prayer that if I boarded, I would die,” the preacher said.
“I told my wife that if we flew, there would be breaking news about our deaths. So we decided to use the train instead.”
His statement quickly went viral, sparking heated reactions from Kenyans on social media.
Many people accused the pastor of trying to gain attention by linking himself to a national tragedy. Others said his story did not match the known facts about the crash.
According to official reports, the aircraft that crashed was flying from Diani in Kwale County to the Maasai Mara in Narok County.
Pastor Ezekiel’s claim that he planned to travel from Mombasa to Nairobi raised doubts about the truth of his statement.
Social media users questioned why the preacher did not pray for the passengers’ safety if he truly had a vision of the accident.
“If God warned him, why didn’t he ask for mercy for those who died?” one user commented.
Another wrote, “He should not use other people’s pain to get attention.”
The Diani crash left Kenyans mourning the deaths of 11 tourists who were on their way to Maasai Mara. Photos from the scene showed the aircraft completely destroyed after hitting the ground.
Despite the criticism, Pastor Ezekiel has remained silent since his remarks went public. Many Kenyans have urged religious leaders to be more sensitive when speaking about tragedies and to avoid using such moments for publicity.
The government is still investigating the cause of the crash, while families of the victims continue to demand answers and justice for their loved ones.
