Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has alleged that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is secretly hoping the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) wins the upcoming Malava and Mbeere North by-elections.
Taking to social media on Saturday, October 25, the former Jubilee MP claimed the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader is rooting for UDA victories despite being in the so-called united opposition.
According to Wambugu, the former deputy president's motivation lies in political strategy rather than loyalty to the opposition.
The ex-Nyeri Town lawmaker argued that a UDA win in Mbeere North would help Gachagua downplay the influence of Justin Muturi, whose Democratic Party is fielding Newton Kariuki with backing from the united opposition.
"We must also know Gachagua does not want the opposition to win in Mbeere, as it would mean JB must be taken seriously in Mt Kenya East, which will be a direct threat to him. So he is also praying UDA wins," the ex-MP wrote.
Recent opinion polls by Mizani Africa and Politrak Africa have placed UDA’s Leonard Muthende ahead in the Mbeere North race, with Kariuki trailing behind.
Wambugu also claimed that Gachagua is silently hoping UDA’s David Ndakwa defeats DAP-K’s Seth Panyako.
According to the former Nyeri Town MP, this will help Gachagua argue that Eugene Wamalwa's DAP-K should have dropped out in favour of DCP.
"Gachagua is also praying UDA takes Malava so that he can tell Eugene Wamalwa he should have been allowed to field alone as he would have won," Wambugu stated.
Gachagua’s DCP has fielded Edgar Busiega in Malava, defying calls by Wamalwa to step down in favour of Panyako.
Both the Malava and Mbeere North parliamentary by-elections are scheduled for November 27. They will run alongside 22 other mini-polls across the country.
