Speaking on Wednesday at his home in Irunduni, Tharaka Nithi County, where he hosted thousands of residents for Christmas celebrations, the Deputy President said the festive season should be a time of joy, not mourning caused by preventable road accidents.
Prof. Kindiki expressed concern over the rising number of fatalities reported on Kenyan roads, noting that many of the crashes are avoidable if drivers act responsibly.
“Most Kenyans are travelling to be with their families for Christmas and the New Year. I urge all drivers, whether operating public service or private vehicles, to be vigilant and responsible. You are carrying precious lives that matter to this country. Human life is irreplaceable,” he said.
The Deputy President cited recent data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), describing the figures as worrying. He noted that dozens of people have lost their lives in road crashes in recent days alone.
“According to NTSA, at least 25 people died in road accidents in a single day on Tuesday. This year, we have lost many citizens on our roads, yet most of these tragedies could have been avoided through careful driving,” he said.
Kindiki urged drivers to observe traffic rules, avoid speeding, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol, especially during the festive period when roads are busy.
During the event, the Deputy President also updated residents on development projects underway in Tharaka Nithi County and other parts of the country.
He said the government will continue investing in infrastructure, including roads and electricity, in the coming year.
“We have resumed road construction, and many projects are ongoing across the country. This momentum will continue into 2026 as our economy improves due to deliberate economic interventions,” he said.
Kindiki added that the national electrification programme remains a priority, with the government aiming to connect more households to power.
“Our goal is to ensure every home has electricity. Funding for this programme is available, and implementation is progressing well,” he said.
He concluded by wishing Kenyans a peaceful Christmas and urged them to prioritise safety as they celebrate and travel during the holiday season.
