The man, identified as Humphrey Mwai, had not been seen since Monday night, prompting his family and neighbors to launch a search.
Their hopes were shattered early Tuesday morning when his body was discovered within the family compound, a short distance from the shop run by his wife.
According to family members, villagers who had gone to open the shop raised an alarm after making the grim discovery. News of the incident quickly spread through the area, drawing shocked residents to the scene.
Mwai’s father, 85-year-old Danson Mute, described the moment as devastating, saying the family had been anxiously waiting for his safe return.
“We searched for him the whole night, believing he would come back home. Finding him like this has broken our hearts,” he said.
Local authorities confirmed the incident and described it as unusual and deeply disturbing. Nyangati Location Chief Immaculate Wanjiru Njoka said residents alerted her shortly after the body was found.
“This is a shocking case for the community. Preliminary observations show that the deceased may have sustained serious injuries. Police officers are already investigating to establish what happened,” the chief said.
Family members said Mwai was a hardworking farmer who lived peacefully with his family. His brother-in-law, Samuel Kinyua, who also serves as the village in-charge, noted that the family had been preparing to celebrate Christmas together before tragedy struck.
Neighbors expressed fear and concern, calling on security agencies to act swiftly and ensure justice is served.
Some residents said the incident has left the normally quiet village in fear, especially with the festive season underway.
Authorities have since moved the body to Kibugi Funeral Home in Kutus, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Police have launched investigations and urged residents to share any information that may assist in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident.
