Wiper in Trouble? Kalonzo's Party Grip on Machakos Under Threat as Three-Way Gubernatorial Race Takes Shape for 2027

The race for the Machakos gubernatorial seat is already generating intense political interest ahead of the 2027 General Election, with emerging developments pointing to a highly competitive three-way contest that could reshape the county’s political landscape.

For years, Machakos has been regarded as one of the strongest political bases of the Wiper Democratic Movement, the party associated with former Vice President and opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka. 

However, growing competition within the party and the entry of a formidable challenger from the ruling side could make the county one of the most closely watched battlegrounds in the country.

At the center of the race is incumbent Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who is expected to seek a second term on a Wiper ticket. 

Since taking office, Wavinya has overseen various development projects across the county and is likely to campaign on her administration’s record in infrastructure, health services, water projects, and youth empowerment initiatives.

However, her path to re-election may not be straightforward. Patrick Makau, a fellow Wiper politician and current Mavoko MP, has also been linked to the gubernatorial race. His reported interest introduces the possibility of an internal contest that could divide the party’s support base before the election even begins.

Political analysts argue that competition between two influential figures from the same party could create significant challenges for Wiper if not managed carefully. Party primaries have historically been a source of tension in Kenyan politics, and unresolved disputes often result in defections, voter apathy, or independent candidacies that weaken established political parties.

Adding another dimension to the contest is Nzioka Waita, who is widely expected to enter the race under the banner of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Waita is regarded as a seasoned administrator with extensive experience in government and public service, having previously served in senior positions at State House.

His potential candidacy is likely to attract significant attention due to his national profile and connections within the current administration. Supporters believe his government experience and development agenda could appeal to voters seeking a different leadership approach for the county.

The possibility of a divided Wiper vote combined with a united UDA campaign has become a major talking point among political observers. If Wavinya and Makau both command substantial support from traditional Wiper voters, analysts say the resulting split could create an opening for Waita to mount a serious challenge in a county long considered a Wiper stronghold.

Beyond individual candidates, the contest will also serve as a test of broader political trends in the Ukambani region. The outcome could provide important clues about the future influence of Wiper and the ability of UDA to expand its footprint in areas traditionally dominated by opposition parties.

For Kalonzo Musyoka and Wiper strategists, maintaining unity within the party may prove just as important as campaigning against external opponents. The party's ability to manage internal ambitions, avoid divisive nominations, and rally supporters behind a single candidate could ultimately determine whether it retains control of Machakos or faces a major political setback.

Although the election remains more than a year away, early alignments suggest Machakos is heading toward one of the most fiercely contested gubernatorial races in Kenya. With powerful personalities, competing political interests, and shifting alliances already taking shape, the battle for the county is likely to dominate political discussions in the months ahead.
