A quiet but firm statement by Ida Odinga has added a new layer to the growing succession debate within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), as internal jockeying over the party’s future leadership gathers pace.
Speaking amid rising disputes in the more than 20-year-old party, Ida insisted that ODM members and supporters must rally behind and respect Senator Oburu Oginga Odinga as the party’s political anchor.
She emphasised that Oburu, Raila Odinga’s elder brother, best understands the ideological direction and political instincts that have defined ODM since its formation.
At one point, Ida famously remarked that those seeking to understand what her husband Raila thinks should “listen to Dr Oginga and read his body language,” a statement many now interpret as a clear endorsement of Oburu’s central role as succession debates intensify.
Her remarks come at a time when ODM is grappling with internal divisions, competing ambitions, and pressure to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Party insiders say the Odinga family has become increasingly active behind the scenes to safeguard Raila’s political legacy and prevent fragmentation within the party.
Oburu Odinga, who currently serves as ODM’s party leader and Siaya Senator, is expected to play a decisive role in key decisions, including whether the party will field its own presidential candidate or align with President William Ruto’s broad-based government going forward.
Meanwhile, members of the third generation of the Odinga family, including Winnie Odinga and Raila Odinga Jr., have also become more visible on the national stage, fuelling speculation about who may eventually inherit Raila’s political mantle.
However, Ida’s firm stance signals that, for now, unity and respect for established leadership remain non-negotiable.
