The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has clarified that the remains were recovered within the same compound in Ngangarithi Estate where her boyfriend, John Muriithi, also known as Tizo, lived, deepening suspicions around the case.
Investigators first discovered a human torso stuffed in a sack near the perimeter fence of a hostel in the estate.
Unknown to the family at the time, it was located in the same residential compound linked to the suspect.
Just days before her disappearance, Joy’s father, Reverend Peter Gathu Kanyua, had met her in Nyeri town.
She had been with her mother on errands, and although the family expected her to travel home to Lamuria in Kieni, she declined but promised to visit later.
That visit never happened.
The case took a turn when her boyfriend reported her missing, claiming he had not seen her for several days.
He later accompanied Reverend Kanyua to Nyeri Central Police Station after stating that he had already filed a missing person report.
While at the station, police discussed an unidentified body that had been recovered earlier that day.
The boyfriend reportedly dismissed concerns, saying he had seen the body and confirmed it was not Joy.

Investigators later noted suspicious details, including him carrying Joy’s phone without a SIM card and claiming she had removed it herself.
He also said her driving licence was at his residence but left the station shortly after and did not return.
The torso was later identified at Nyeri County Referral Hospital, where Reverend Kanyua said a birthmark matched his daughter’s. DNA tests confirmed her identity.
Further searches uncovered more body parts wrapped in black polythene bags, including remains recovered from a pit latrine in the same compound.
Police also found a blood-stained mattress and clothing in Muriithi’s room.
A postmortem indicated excessive bleeding as the cause of death, with evidence suggesting dismemberment using a saw.
Police say the suspect remains at large as the search for Joy’s missing head continues. Investigations are ongoing.
