While the event is primarily a religious and historical celebration, it has quickly taken on a political dimension, given the tense relations between the national government and Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi.
High Court advocate Wahome Thuku, in a recent Facebook post, highlighted that political mobilisation is expected during the celebration.
He claimed that leaders aligned with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), led by Thika-based political organiser Alice Nganga, have mobilised supporters to attend the Mass in large numbers.
Thuku noted that groups of women from areas such as Witeithie, some in Catholic Women’s Guild attire, are likely to be part of the gathering. Their presence, he suggested, would be a visible show of support for Ruto’s allies in the county.
The lawyer emphasised that the mobilisation appears aimed at creating a political display, underscoring the long-standing differences between President Ruto and Governor Wamatangi. The governor has often been at odds with the national government, and his relationship with key UDA leaders has remained strained.
However, Thuku pointed out that Wamatangi is expected to counter any attempt to overshadow him. “Lakini Wamatangi is not a pushover,” he wrote, adding that the real balance of power will be seen on the ground. He ended with “Reke cionane,” hinting at a political test of strength.
In addition to the Mang’u High School Mass, Thuku revealed that President Ruto will host all Kiambu Members of County Assembly at State House on Monday.
The meeting is seen as a strategic move, especially amid ongoing tensions between the county leadership and the national government.
Observers say the centenary celebrations at Mang’u High School could serve as a window into Kiambu’s political dynamics, with long-standing rifts and expected showdowns likely to shape discussions and alliances.
As Kiambu prepares for the Mass, both supporters of the governor and Ruto’s camp are expected to turn out in large numbers, making the event a focal point of politics as well as faith.
