Tension in Gachagua's Camp as Wahome Alleges Top Mt Kenya Politician Set to Exit DCP

A wave of political speculation has hit the Mt Kenya region following comments from Advocate Wahome Thuku, a prominent High Court lawyer.

On his Facebook page, Thuku claimed that Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji is expected to leave the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) either this weekend or early next week.

To show how confident he is, Thuku even dared skeptics to bet KSh 50,000 on the claim.

The statement immediately caught public attention, largely because Mukunji is seen as a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Since Gachagua broke away from the ruling party to form DCP, Mukunji has been one of the few elected leaders in Mt Kenya still closely associated with the former DP’s political movement. Any move by him to leave would therefore be viewed as significant.

Social media users and political analysts were quick to weigh in. Some agreed with Thuku, suggesting that internal party dynamics and the pressures of opposition politics could force Mukunji to rethink his position.

Others, however, dismissed the post as speculation, noting that the MP has a history of rejecting rumours about abandoning Gachagua’s camp.

At the time of the post, Mukunji had not publicly responded, which only added to the speculation. Observers say his next steps will be closely watched, as they could influence the DCP’s influence in the Mt Kenya region and beyond.

For a party already facing challenges in retaining its elected officials, losing a high-profile ally would be a major setback.

The timing of the claim is also noteworthy. With the 2027 General Election on the horizon, political alignments in Kenya remain in flux.

Many leaders are evaluating their positions, considering factors such as party loyalty, regional support, and personal political survival.

Decisions made now could have long-term implications for both the politicians involved and the parties they represent.

While it remains to be seen whether Thuku’s prediction will materialize, his public assertion has undeniably placed Mukunji under scrutiny.

Kenyans and political watchers alike are now watching closely to see whether the MP will maintain his allegiance to Gachagua and DCP or chart a new political path.

Either way, the coming days are set to be critical in shaping the region’s political dynamics.
