Fresh details continue to emerge about internal weaknesses that affected Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaign.
New claims point to poor coordination within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, leading to the failure to use ready grassroots structures in key regions.
Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has revealed that a large support team he helped assemble was never deployed during the campaign period.
The team included about 15,000 agents, mobilisers, and civic educators who were prepared to work across the Lower Eastern region.
The group was set up early enough and was meant to strengthen voter education, turnout, and election day operations.
Despite being ready, the team remained idle throughout the campaign.
Kibwana believes the main reason was internal politics within the coalition. At the time, he was affiliated with the Muungano Party, which was part of the Azimio alliance.
He argues that party differences created barriers that blocked smooth cooperation.
According to him, the campaign structure failed to properly integrate partners from smaller coalition parties.
This resulted in wasted manpower and weakened mobilisation efforts on the ground.
These concerns support similar observations made earlier by former MP Kabando wa Kabando.
Kabando had pointed out that campaign officials sometimes needed clearance from specific local power brokers before deploying county agents.
This slowed down operations and created confusion.
The claims suggest that decision making within the campaign was fragmented. Instead of using available teams efficiently, authority was concentrated in a way that limited flexibility at the regional level.
