Speaking amid rising debate over possible political realignments, Dr. Mbae said an ODM–UDA coalition would effectively reduce the opposition party into an empty shell, stripped of its founding ideals and role in Kenya’s multiparty democracy. He argued that ODM was built as a reformist movement meant to check those in power, a mission that would be compromised by aligning with the ruling establishment.
“ODM will be left as a shell if they go into a coalition with UDA,” Dr. Mbae stated, warning that such a move would alienate loyal supporters and weaken the broader opposition voice in the country.
He disclosed that DCP leaders have engaged Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, urging them not to abandon ODM despite internal disagreements and external pressure. According to Dr. Mbae, the two leaders represent a new generation that can reclaim the party’s original spirit.
“We have advised Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino not to leave ODM, but to capture the soul of the party before eventually joining the United Opposition,” he said.
Dr. Mbae emphasized that strong and principled leadership within ODM is essential to prevent the erosion of opposition politics. He noted that hasty exits by influential figures would only accelerate the decline of parties that once stood for accountability, social justice, and democratic reforms.
The DCP official further called for the formation of a united opposition anchored on shared values and ideology rather than political convenience. He maintained that genuine opposition unity must prioritise citizens’ interests, economic justice, and good governance.
His remarks come at a time when ODM is grappling with internal tensions and speculation over its future direction, with the party’s supporters keenly watching its next political moves.
