What followed was a heartbreaking struggle for survival in the busy streets of Nairobi, forcing him to sleep in cheap lodgings and endure conditions no young person should ever face.
Kevin’s story began in Nairobi’s informal settlements, where he lived with his mother and younger siblings after his father passed away several years ago. According to him, things were already difficult after the death of his father, but he always believed his mother would stand by the family.
“We struggled, but at least we had each other,” Kevin recalled. “Even when there was no food, I knew we would somehow survive together.”
However, life changed dramatically after his mother allegedly started spending more time away from home. Kevin says she became distant and less concerned about their welfare. Soon, financial support became scarce, and the family’s already difficult life worsened.
“At first, I thought she was trying to make money for us,” he explained. “But one day she just stopped coming home regularly. Eventually, she disappeared completely and left us struggling.”
Without enough money to pay rent, Kevin and his siblings were evicted. While relatives temporarily took in the younger children, Kevin found himself with nowhere to go. Determined to survive and avoid sleeping on the streets, he started spending nights in cheap, poorly maintained lodgings in Nairobi whenever he could afford them.
The conditions were unbearable.
“The rooms smelled terrible, the beds were dirty, and there were times I had no proper water to bathe,” he shared. “Some days, I had no choice but to clean myself using dirty drainage water because I had nowhere else to go.”
The humiliating experience left deep emotional scars. Watching other young people his age live normal lives while he struggled daily made him feel hopeless.
