“Rais, usichoke kujenga kanisa; umepigwa sana kwa sababu ya kanisa, na sisi hatutakuachilia,” Maina Urges Ruto to Stay Committed to Church Building Amid Growing Public Debate

Nominated Senator Veronicah Maina has called on President William Ruto to remain steadfast in supporting church construction, even as criticism continues to mount over his involvement in religious fundraising and development projects.

Speaking during a church service in Murang’a County on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Maina delivered a strong message of encouragement to the Head of State, urging him not to be discouraged by opposition to his faith-based initiatives.

She emphasized that his efforts to build places of worship would ultimately yield spiritual and personal rewards.

“Rais, usichoke kujenga kanisa; umepigwa sana kwa sababu ya kanisa, na sisi hatutakuachilia,” Maina said, expressing solidarity with the president and affirming continued support from like-minded leaders and congregants.

Her remarks come at a time when President Ruto’s relationship with the church has become a focal point of national discussion.

Over the past year, some of his financial contributions to religious institutions have drawn criticism, with a few churches even rejecting donations amid concerns about the intersection of politics and religion.

Despite the backlash, Ruto has remained firm in his stance, maintaining that his commitment to supporting church development is rooted in personal faith.

He has previously stated that he has participated in building numerous churches and has no intention of stopping.

The president has also publicly expressed his long-term desire to transition into evangelism after completing his tenure in office.

Maina reminded congregants that Ruto’s rise to power was significantly supported by religious communities, suggesting that his continued engagement with the church reflects both gratitude and conviction. She framed his efforts as part of a broader moral and spiritual responsibility rather than a political strategy.

The president’s appearance in Murang’a also carried political significance. His visit to A.I.C. Githumu in Kandara came just days after an extensive tour of the Mt Kenya region, where he has been engaging with local leaders and residents. The region remains a crucial political base, having played a key role in his 2022 electoral victory.

Accompanied by several government officials and regional leaders, Ruto used the church service as an opportunity to reconnect with grassroots supporters while reinforcing his administration’s development agenda.
