Ex-Raila Odinga's Bodyguard Maurice Ogeta Appointed as Advisor on Security Affairs in Mombasa

Maurice Ogeta, has been appointed as Advisor on Security Affairs in the County Government of Mombasa.

The announcement was made by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, who praised Ogeta's extensive experience in security matters.

Ogeta, a native of Kondele in Kisumu County, has built a distinguished career in security spanning over 25 years. He became a household name in Kenyan politics as Raila Odinga's chief bodyguard, a role he held for nearly two decades.

Often described as Odinga's "shadow" and "shield," Ogeta was by the opposition leader's side through countless high-stakes events, including anti-government protests, international travels, and personal health challenges.

His unwavering loyalty was on full display during Raila's final moments in October 2025, when Ogeta was present as the veteran politician collapsed and later passed away at the age of 80.

Following Raila's death, which sent shockwaves across Kenya and prompted widespread tributes, Ogeta's future became a topic of public interest.

President William Ruto publicly commended Ogeta's dedication during Raila's state funeral, even offering him opportunities within the national government.

However, former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria advised against Ogeta returning to a similar VIP protection role, suggesting it might undervalue his expertise and experience.

Governor Nassir's appointment comes amid ongoing discussions about political transitions in Kenya post-Raila.

In his statement, Nassir emphasized Ogeta's "deep institutional knowledge built at local, regional, and global levels," noting that his background makes him ideally suited to advise on security issues in Mombasa, a key coastal hub facing challenges like urban crime, port security, and tourism safety.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, which Raila led, congratulated Ogeta on social media, calling it a fitting recognition of his service.

This development has been met with positive reactions online, with many Kenyans praising the governor for honoring Ogeta's contributions.

"Maurice Ogeta deserves this and more. Loyal to the end," one user posted on X. Others see it as a bridge between Raila's political era and emerging leadership in devolved units.
