"ODM Iko Imara" Winnie Odinga Celebrates Boyd Were's Kasipul Victory

ODM’s Boyd Were has secured the Kasipul parliamentary seat with a commanding lead, earning praise from political leaders across the country — among them East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga, who described the win as a major triumph for young people in leadership.

Were, 27, clinched the seat in the Thursday by-election after weeks of fast-paced campaigns that drew intense interest from Homa Bay County residents.

His win now positions him as one of the youngest MPs in the region and reinforces ODM’s strong grip on the constituency.

According to the final tally released by Kasipul Returning Officer Rebecca Abwakhu, Were triumphantly topped the race with 16,819 votes, more than doubling the 8,476 votes garnered by his closest challenger, independent candidate Philip Aroko.

As the results were announced at Agoro Sare High School, jubilant supporters burst into chants, waving party colours and celebrating the emphatic victory.

Senior ODM leaders, including Governor Gladys Wanga and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, joined Were on stage as he received his certificate from the IEBC.

The celebrations came despite earlier reports of tension in the constituency, including an incident where Kaluma was assaulted during the voting period.

However, the final moments of the tallying process saw rival camps calm down as the margin became clear.

In his first address as MP-elect, Were expressed deep gratitude to residents for believing in his vision, promising to serve faithfully and honour the trust placed in him.

“I want to thank the residents of Kasipul for believing in me,” he said.

“This victory is a responsibility I intend to carry with diligence. I also appreciate our party leadership and Governor Gladys Wanga for standing with youthful leadership. The people of Kasipul have done their part — now it is my turn to deliver.”

Were, who succeeds his late father, vowed to return “to the drawing board” and focus on development programmes that had formed the backbone of his campaign.

EALA MP Winnie Odinga was among the first ODM leaders to publicly celebrate Were’s triumph. In a congratulatory message shared on Instagram, she called the victory a powerful statement about the potential and strength of Kenya’s youthful leaders.

“This is a huge win for the youth,” she wrote.

“Hongera Boyd for winning the Kasipul seat. ODM iko imara.”

Her remarks sparked a wave of reactions online, with many young supporters echoing her sentiment that the election marked a generational shift within ODM ranks.

Away from the political statements, Were’s mother added a personal touch to the night’s celebrations.

In a widely shared video, she was seen rejoicing with friends and relatives after her son’s victory was confirmed.
