Speaking during a radio interview on Wednesday, Kioni said the slogan, popularized by the united opposition, was meant to be a strong rallying call against President William Ruto’s administration. However, he argued that it has failed to serve its purpose.
According to Kioni, the Constitution already provides that an elected leader serves a five-year term and must vacate office once the term ends. For that reason, he believes repeating “Wantam” adds no real pressure on the government.
“If you tell me that at the end of my contract I must go, I will ask you, ‘What am I supposed to do since it’s obvious?’” he remarked.
Kioni went on to say the phrase has turned into an advantage for the government. He noted that instead of feeling threatened, State House has become more open and confident.
“Before the slogan, the government was uneasy because of Gen Z protests that even threatened to occupy State House. But once ‘Wantam’ came, the gates were opened wide, and they now welcome delegations freely. The regime feels stronger, not weaker,” he explained.
