Wanted But Unstoppable: Bobi Wine Smiles, Takes Selfie As He Secretly Passes Police Roadblock

A viral selfie has sparked debate across Uganda after opposition leader Bobi Wine appeared to pass through police roadblocks without being noticed, even though he was officially declared wanted by security authorities.

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has been in hiding since the disputed January 15 general election. The election was won by President Yoweri Museveni, but the opposition and human rights groups rejected the results, claiming there was vote rigging, violence, arrests, and intimidation of supporters.

On January 25, Bobi Wine briefly resurfaced and travelled to his rural home in Gomba District. During the journey, he passed through several police roadblocks. In a now viral selfie, he is seen sitting inside a vehicle while armed police officers stand nearby, seemingly unaware that the man they were looking for was right in front of them.

Bobi Wine said he went into hiding on the night of the election after security forces raided his home in an attempt to arrest him. He claimed that his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, and other family members were placed under house arrest. Later, Uganda People’s Defence Forces chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba declared him a wanted man, accusing him of inciting unrest.

During his visit to Gomba, Bobi Wine said the trip was personal. He wanted to see his elderly mother and sisters and find strength from home. He also visited the graves of his relatives, describing the moment as emotional and painful.

He criticised the heavy security presence across the country, saying it inconvenienced ordinary citizens more than it protected them. Bobi Wine added that intimidation and force would not stop calls for change.

Despite the risks, he said he would continue engaging with supporters and leaders while living in hiding, insisting that the struggle for a free and just Uganda must continue.
