"Kumbaka Kitu Ulifanyia Raila?" A Section on X Question Gachagua After Posting PHOTO of Othaya Aftermath

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's recent X post detailing a chaotic attack at Wairima ACK Church in Othaya has sparked a wave of online backlash, with many users invoking his past actions against opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The incident, which occurred on January 25, 2026, involved teargas and alleged live bullets being fired into the church during a service attended by Gachagua, leading to claims of an assassination attempt orchestrated by President William Ruto.

In a series of posts on X, Gachagua shared graphic photos showing damaged vehicles and chaotic scenes, stating,

"William Ruto has sent a killer squad to kill us inside Wairima ACK church, Othaya. We are marooned in church being attacked with live bullets and tear gas and torched my vehicles."

He later confirmed his safety, thanking Othaya residents for aiding his evacuation and urging supporters to disperse amid ongoing threats. Gachagua announced a press conference at 5:00 PM on January 25 to address the nation.

The posts quickly went viral, amassing hundreds of thousands of views and eliciting mixed reactions. While some condemned the violence as an assault on democracy and a sacred space, others seized the moment to remind Gachagua of his previous stance on similar incidents involving Odinga.

In 2023, after Odinga was teargassed during post-election protests, Gachagua reportedly mocked it as "law and order."

Netizens on X flooded the comments with questions like "Ukumbuka kitu ulifanyia Raila?" – Swahili for "Do you remember what you did to Raila?" – drawing parallels to Gachagua's alleged involvement in suppressing Odinga's protests.

One user wrote, "When @rigathi Gachagua paid the same Goons to kill Raila... Let Gachietha carry the same Cross now!!" Another added, "Today, after police lobbed teargas inside Wairima Church in Othaya, the 'Truthful Man' finally knows the scent of his own medicine."

Journalist Ken Aseka noted, "The last time the country witnessed such reckless force was when Raila Odinga was being teargassed after 2022 elections. This is anarchy regardless."
