Things Get Messy As Police Throw Teargas At Worshippers During Church Service Attended By Rigathi Gachagua

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of using state security to intimidate him and his supporters after a teargas incident disrupted a church service in Kiambu County.

The incident occurred on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at AIPCA Kiamuoria Church in Gatundu North. Worshippers, including women and children, were affected when teargas was reportedly deployed near the church premises. The disruption caused panic among congregants, prompting Gachagua to address the congregation in both Kikuyu and Swahili.

Gachagua criticised the use of teargas in religious gatherings and said such acts were becoming frequent. He directly blamed President Ruto for the chaos, claiming that state security was being used to intimidate political opponents in the Mt Kenya region.

He also praised the residents of Kiamuoria for remaining calm and refusing to be intimidated. Gachagua thanked young people and church members who attended the service despite the tension. He questioned the presence of police officers, noting that they seemed to be protecting vehicles allegedly brought in to disrupt the gathering.

Gachagua issued a message to President Ruto, warning that attempts to intimidate locals would not change the political mood in the region. He said such actions would only strengthen the resolve of the residents to oppose him.

The church incident followed earlier warnings by Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP) economic and planning adviser Peter Mbae. Mbae claimed that there were plans to disrupt Gachagua’s movements and rallies in Gatundu South. He alleged that local youth were being paid to create chaos while the masterminds stayed away from the scene.
