Sen. Otieno Kajwang Defends ODM Move of Forming a Coalition With UDA, Says This About the Late Raila

Homa Bay County Senator Honourable Otieno Kajwang has boldly come out defending a political coalition between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the UDA.

Kajwang was on record saying that Raila Amollo Odinga used to form Coalitions, after losing Elections.

The senator urged ODM leaders and grassroots supporters to rally behind party leader Oburu Odinga, Raila's elder brother, who has been tasked with leading the structured talks with UDA ahead of the 2027 General Election.

This comes as ODM seeks to secure a stronger position in the formation of the next government, following Raila's untimely passing, which left a leadership vacuum in the party.

Recent developments have intensified the coalition discussions. On January 14, ODM's CMC met in Kilifi and granted Oburu the mandate to initiate formal negotiations with like-minded parties, starting with UDA.

This decision was echoed in a subsequent rally at Kamukunji grounds in Kibera, Nairobi, where party officials dismissed claims of internal divisions and pledged unity.

President Ruto, keen on bolstering his re-election bid, convened UDA's National Executive Council (NEC) to endorse similar talks, with the ruling party agreeing to pursue a pre-election pact aimed at a joint presidential ticket in 2027.

However, the move has not been without controversy. A section of ODM "rebels," including some county chairs, has rejected the coalition talks, insisting they should not proceed until the party's National Delegates Convention (NDC) is convened.

Critics argue that rushing into an alliance with UDA could dilute ODM's opposition roots and alienate its core base. Oburu has stood firm, telling opponents they are free to leave rather than disrupt the party's strategy.

Supporters of the coalition, including Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang, Makadara MP George Aladwa, and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, have hailed it as essential for stable governance and democratic progress.

"The objective is to strengthen the ongoing political partnership and lay the foundation for a formal coalition arrangement ahead of the 2027 General Election," a UDA statement noted.
