Ruto's Iron Fist: CS Kipchumba Murkomen Announce Elite Unit to Hunt Big Fish Drug Lords

On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen escalated his verbal war with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, dismissing claims that the current Cabinet harbors "drug barons."

Murkomen’s rebuttal comes after Gachagua alleged that President William Ruto appointed two notorious traffickers to the Cabinet following Gachagua's impeachment.

The CS described these allegations as a "desperate smear campaign" by a man whose own record in the fight against illicit substances has come under intense scrutiny by the new administration.

In a shocking counter-strike, CS Murkomen accused Gachagua of running a "protection racket" for illicit alcohol manufacturers during his time as deputy president.

Murkomen claimed that Gachagua’s office used the war on illicit brew to extort massive bribes from liquor traders in exchange for business licenses.

The Interior CS stated he is ready to swear an affidavit proving that Gachagua "kitu kikubwa" (took large sums of money) before allowing specific alcohol businesses to operate, effectively sabotaging the very war on drugs he claimed to lead.

While dismissing Gachagua's claims, Murkomen announced the formation of a special Anti-Narcotics Unit, modeled after the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), to target high-level drug distributors.

This new elite squad will focus on the "financial lifelines" of traffickers, shifting from simple arrests to the total seizure of property and assets.

Murkomen emphasized that the era of "minor fines" is over, promising a "painful blow" to any "big fish" regardless of their political standing or proximity to power.

The clash follows President William Ruto’s recent declaration that drug and heroin dealers should "hang," signaling a move toward capital punishment for narcotics offenses. This "iron-fisted" stance is part of a broader 2026 national strategy to "liberate the country" from substance abuse.

By pushing for stiffer penalties and asset forfeiture, the government is attempting to reclaim the moral high ground that Gachagua has sought to challenge through his recent public attacks and church-based "truth" tours.

This exchange is widely viewed as a precursor to the 2027 General Election, as both factions fight for the "morality" vote in the Mt. Kenya region.

While Gachagua seeks to paint Ruto’s Cabinet as a "den of barons," Murkomen is painting the former DP as a "corrupt gatekeeper" who profited from the same vice he condemned.

As the "Wantam" movement grows, the battle over who is truly fighting for the youth against drugs will be a defining issue for voters who feel betrayed by the "silly politics" of the previous campaign.
