Mysterious Death of Juja MP George Thou: From ICC Witness to Victim of Lethal Poison in a Thika Bar

George Thuo was a prominent Kenyan politician and businessman who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Juja Constituency from 2007 to 2010. He was affiliated with the Party of National Unity (PNU) and held the position of Chief Whip for the ruling coalition in Parliament. 

Before entering politics, Thuo had a successful career in business he worked as an accountant, became Managing Director of Kenya Bus Services (KBS), and later founded his own family-owned transport company, City Hopper Ltd also known as Citi Hoppa, which became well-known in Nairobi's public transport sector.

He was elected MP in the 2007 general elections but lost the seat in 2010 after a court nullified the results due to irregularities. In the subsequent by-election, he placed third.

Thuo death

He collapsed while having drinks at Porkies Club also referred to as Porkies Pub or Porkies Garden Restaurant in Thika town, Kiambu County. 

He was rushed to Thika Nursing Home and later to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to post-mortem reports, forensic evidence, and the ruling by the High Court Milimani in April 2024, the official cause of death was hemorrhagic gastroenteritis severe bleeding in the stomach and intestines due to poisoning.

The poison was identified as Cyhalothrin or Cyhalothrine, a pesticide that can cause death within 5–10 minutes of ingestion. Traces were found in his liver, kidneys, shirt, and related items from the club.

The court convicted six individuals—including the club owner Paul Wainaina Boiyo alias Sheki employees, and others for his murder, concluding that his drink was laced with the poison at the club. Note: The convicts were later released on bond pending appeal, as of mid-2025 reports.
