City Lawyer Alleges the Criteria Fred Matiang'i Will Use to Pick His Running Mate Towards 2027 General Polls

Advocate Wahome Thuku, a respected High Court lawyer, has called for Dr. Fred Matiang’i to have full discretion in choosing his running mate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a post on his Facebook account, Thuku emphasized that the presidency should not be reduced to an “arranged marriage,” referring to the controversies that surrounded the 2022 elections.

He argued that negotiated choices have hindered the country’s growth and stagnated its political development.

“Dr. Fred Matiang’i will not be boxed to pick Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate. We don’t want a repeat of 2022,” Thuku wrote.

He further stated that Matiang’i should select a running mate based on personal chemistry and competence, someone capable of taking over the presidency if needed.

Thuku’s remarks have sparked debate on social media, with supporters praising his stance on merit-based selections. Critics, however, argue that alliances are a key part of Kenya’s coalition politics, particularly in tightly contested elections.

Dr. Matiang’i, former Interior Cabinet Secretary, has declared his intention to run for president in 2027 and has been actively engaging in grassroots campaigns.

The Jubilee Party has endorsed him as its candidate, positioning him as a strong contender in the opposition landscape.

Political analysts say Thuku’s comments reflect a growing concern among leaders and voters over the influence of pre-negotiated political deals.

Many believe that for Kenya to progress, presidential aspirants should have the freedom to choose deputies who complement their vision and leadership style.

As the 2027 race intensifies, the choice of running mate could be crucial. Matiang’i faces the challenge of balancing regional representation, party interests, and public appeal, all while staying true to his vision of meritocracy.

Thuku concluded that a president and running mate should work as a team based on shared values and capability, not just political convenience.

He urged voters to support candidates who prioritize competency and genuine leadership over political arrangements.

With tensions rising and alliances still forming, Matiang’i’s decision on his deputy could set the tone for Kenya’s next electoral battle.
