The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has revealed that 32 political parties remain in limbo as it cannot verify their offices and membership due to lack of funds. Registrar John Cox Lorionokou said each verification costs about Sh3.9 million, bringing the total needed to Sh62.4 million. Without verification, these parties cannot fully register, access public funding, or field candidates in the 2027 elections.
Lorionokou spoke during the 2026 Legislative Retreat in Nakuru, highlighting that the office has seen an increase in party registration applications but is constrained by funding gaps. He said verification involves confirming functional offices in at least 24 counties, meeting minimum membership requirements, following gender rules, and including special interest groups in leadership.
