Machakos county deputy governor Francis Mwangangi has defended governor Wavinya Ndeti’s absence from president William Ruto’s tour of the county, saying she was not invited and would not attend an event where “leaders are disrespected”.
Speaking at Kyemutheke technical training institute, Mwangangi said the governor’s decision was guided by principle, not politics, insisting that leaders from the wiper party will not participate in forums where their party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is insulted.
Mwangangi accused the president of creating a hostile environment for opposition leaders, citing recent remarks in which Ruto allegedly referred to leaders as “brainless.”
He said such language was unacceptable and undermined national unity.
“Governor Wavinya has not joined the president’s tour because she was not invited. Again, we don’t go anywhere where there is disrespect,” said Mwangangi.
“Ruto telling leaders they are brainless is an insult. We can’t attend events where Kalonzo is being attacked. Our leaders must be respected,” he added.
He described Kalonzo as a national figure with a clear vision, saying he cannot be associated with killings and abductions.
Mwangangi maintained that wiper members would not be present at presidential events until the tone of political engagement changes.
“You will not find any wiper member in such places. We want the president to know we have allowed him to do his work, but the day he stops such insults, we will attend,” he said.
