Embu County Officials Warn Against Violence Ahead of Mbeere North By-Election

The Embu County Security Committee has issued a strong warning to individuals planning to disrupt peace ahead of the upcoming Mbeere North by-election scheduled for November 27, 2025.

Addressing the media in Embu town, County Commissioner Jack Obuo, who chairs the security committee, said the campaigns have generally remained peaceful since the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared the candidates.

However, he expressed concern over the circulation of online videos showing individuals issuing threats of violence and intimidation.

“Mbeere North has enjoyed peaceful campaigns since candidates were cleared by the IEBC. But in recent days, we’ve seen some disturbing video clips circulating online, with certain individuals making violent threats. This will not be tolerated,” said Obuo.

The commissioner revealed that four individuals have already been summoned for questioning after allegedly recording and sharing inflammatory remarks during a recent visit to the constituency by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to Obuo, the National Police Service and other security agencies are closely monitoring the situation and will not hesitate to take firm legal action against anyone attempting to cause unrest or incite violence before or during the polls.

“Security agencies are fully on alert. We are closely watching all activities in the constituency, and anyone found spreading hate speech or organizing chaos will face prosecution,” he warned.

The commissioner urged all political candidates and their supporters to exercise restraint, uphold peace, and respect each other’s political space during the campaigns.

He reminded them that they had all signed a code of conduct with the IEBC, committing themselves to peaceful campaigning and lawful behavior.

“Let candidates notify police before holding their meetings or rallies. They agreed to operate within the law and to promote tolerance. We expect nothing less than full compliance,” said Obuo.

He also appealed to local residents to remain calm, avoid divisive rhetoric, and report any suspicious activities or individuals who might be attempting to disrupt the election process.

Obuo emphasized that preparations for the by-election are in top gear, with multi-agency security teams deployed to monitor the area and ensure a smooth, transparent, and peaceful voting process.

The committee has coordinated efforts between the police, provincial administration, and the electoral commission to secure polling stations and transportation of election materials.

He assured residents that security measures are in place to safeguard both voters and election officials on the polling day.

“We are ready to protect the democratic process. Anyone who tries to undermine peace will be dealt with firmly and according to the law,” he stated.

The Mbeere North by-election follows the nullification of the previous parliamentary results earlier this year after a successful court petition.

Several candidates have been cleared to contest the seat, and the campaigns have drawn significant local and national interest.
