The National Police Service has reported arresting people suspected of attacking Homa Bay Town MP, Peter Kaluma, on Thursday.
The 16 are accused of being among thugs who attacked the MP at Agoro Sare Primary School during Thursday’s by-election exercise in Kasipul Constituency.
The NPS says the perpetrators were found with ten pangas, five knives, as well as clubs and stones.
The police have also intercepted two motorcycles and five vehicles suspected of having been used to mobilise the said goons.
“All suspects are being held in police custody pending their arraignment in court,” NPS said in the statement.
“The Service will continue to intensify operations countrywide to deter crime, safeguard public safety, and maintain law and order.”
The MP was attacked while in the line of duty, as the chief agent of ODM candidate Boyd Were.
He has claimed that he was attacked by goons allied to independent candidate Philip Aroko, whom he claims was in the company of those who assaulted him.
“Philip Aroko came in personally to Agoro Sare Primary, and I went to receive him. I thought it was Boyd Were because I am his chief agent here for the ODM party, as you can see the accreditation card by IEBC," he said.
He added that the group also disarmed his bodyguard and handed over his gun to Aroko, who then left with it.
“The bad things they did are, on Aroko’s instructions, they have taken my security’s gun, and it was handed over to him before he left. Aroko has the gun belonging to my security."
