BREAKINF NEWS: Raila Odinga’s Sister, Beryl Achieng, Passes Away

The Odinga family has been thrown into mourning following the death of Beryl Achieng Odinga, an elder sister of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Her death was confirmed on Tuesday, November 25, by her younger sister and Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, who shared the news on behalf of the family.

In her statement, Ruth noted that the family was heartbroken by the sudden loss but remained thankful for Beryl’s life and the moments they shared with her.

She described Beryl as a warm, steady presence within the Odinga family, someone who connected different generations and carried the values passed down by their parents.

Beryl was a daughter of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mary Ajuma Oginga, two influential figures whose legacy still shapes Kenya’s political landscape.

She was a mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai, and a sister to Dr. Oburu Oginga, Raila Odinga, Akinyi Wenwa, and several others.

Her extended family includes daughters-in-law and relatives who have played roles in public service and community leadership.

In her tribute, Ruth expressed deep sorrow but also spoke of the family's belief that Beryl had found peace.

She thanked everyone who had supported the family in recent months, noting that losing two close family members in a short period had been especially painful.

The family has asked for privacy as they prepare funeral arrangements.

Beryl’s death comes barely a month after the burial of her younger brother, Raila Odinga, who was laid to rest at the family home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County.

Raila’s funeral attracted leaders from across the country and beyond. His final send-off included a service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), where friends, family, and national leaders gathered to honor his life.

During Raila’s burial, members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) carried his body and performed full military rites, underlining his long public service.

Raila was interred with his iconic hat and fly whisk, items that had become symbols of his identity throughout his political career.

The private ceremony was attended by his immediate family, including Mama Ida Odinga, Rosemary, Raila Jr., and Winnie Odinga, along with his longtime bodyguard Maurice Ogeta.

National leaders, led by President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretaries, governors, and MPs, also attended the event.

Now, as the Odinga family faces yet another painful loss, Kenyans from all walks of life have begun to send messages of comfort.
