Thousands of members of the Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders from Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties on Friday, August 7, 2026, symbolically crowned Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as the political kingpin of the Mt. Kenya East region.
The traditional endorsement is widely seen as a significant political boost for Kindiki and a setback for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has also been seeking to consolidate support across the Mt. Kenya region.
During the ceremony, the elders declared Kindiki the region's preferred leader, signaling a shift in political influence within Mt. Kenya East as the country inches closer to the 2027 General Election.
The endorsement is expected to intensify the rivalry between Kindiki and Gachagua, with both camps competing for dominance and influence in the broader Mt. Kenya political landscape. READ FULL STORY HERE.
