AL-SHABAAB MEMBER SENTENCED TO 115 YEARS AFTER CONVICTION ON SEVEN TERRORISM COUNTS.

A Kahawa Law Courts has sentenced convicted Al-Shabaab member Ibrahim Hussein Hassan to a combined 115 years in prison after finding him guilty on seven terrorism related charges.

However, the sentences will run concurrently, meaning Hassan will serve 20 years in jail, the longest sentence imposed on a single count.

The court convicted Hassan of being a member of the outlawed Al-Shabaab terrorist group, collecting information linked to the commission of terrorist acts, and possessing materials connected to terrorism.

The offences arose from his arrest in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on September 6, 2022, where investigators established his links to the banned extremist organisation.

During the trial, forensic investigators recovered three extremist propaganda videos from Hassan's Samsung mobile phone, with the court finding the material capable of recruiting, training, and radicalising young people into terrorist activities.

Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered that Hassan undergo a deradicalisation programme while serving his term.
