Inside ODM's High-Stakes Plan That Could Redraw the 2027 Political Battlefield

President William Ruto's broad-based government has placed ODM at a political crossroads, with the party now debating whether zoning key regions is the best strategy to protect its influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The discussion has gained momentum as ODM leaders seek to defend areas they consider the party's traditional strongholds, including Nyanza, Western Kenya and the Coast.

Supporters of the plan argue that allowing intense competition in these regions could weaken the party and hand an advantage to rivals.

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga strongly backed the idea of zoning, saying every political party has a responsibility to first secure its strongest bases.

"We start with our areas where we have strongholds—where we have our governors, our MPs, and our MCAs," Oburu said.

He maintained that protecting ODM's traditional support bases would strengthen the party before it competes in other parts of the country.
