Who Is Funding Galana-Kulalu? Inside Kenya’s KSh 12.5B Food Project That Aims to End Maize Shortage

Kenya’s ambitious Galana-Kulalu irrigation project has received a major boost after a private investor committed KSh 12.5 billion to its development.

The scheme, located along the Galana and Kulalu ranches, is seen as a game-changer in boosting food production and creating jobs for thousands of Kenyans.

According to National Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, the investment will be channeled into key infrastructure including farm roads, irrigation networks, and storage facilities.

He explained that the improvements will allow smooth movement of farm inputs and harvested maize, helping the project reach its full potential.

The first phase of the project will cover 20,000 acres under irrigation. Officials estimate that each acre could produce up to 70 bags of maize annually.

This translates to 1.4 million bags of maize, worth around KSh 5.6 billion every year. Work on Phase 1B has already started, covering an additional 1,700 acres, and the government hopes to expand the project to over 4,500 acres in the coming years.
