Speaking on June 6, 2026, Bitok said some assessments are creating tension among learners, prompting the government to ask school boards and administrators to reconsider or temporarily postpone mock examinations where necessary.

The PS urged school leaders to engage students through dialogue and understand the challenges they face instead of relying solely on strict academic schedules.

According to him, open discussions can help identify the causes of anxiety and prevent unrest in schools.

His remarks come amid growing concerns following a series of fire incidents in learning institutions, including the tragic blaze at Utumishi Academy in Gilgil that claimed 16 lives.

Other schools, among them Kakamega High School and Kisii School, have also reported fire outbreaks.

Bitok, however, ruled out an early school closure, maintaining that learning continues normally in most institutions as the government conducts a nationwide safety audit of boarding schools.
