“ The Man of Movements ,” Is Kalonzo Following Policy or Just Slogans ?

Kenya’s veteran politician and Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has over the years been closely associated with a series of political formations, coalitions, and mobilisation platforms that have shaped opposition politics in the country.

From party realignments to reform campaigns and election coalitions, his political journey has often been defined by what supporters call “movements,” while critics argue that they are mostly shifting political strategies rather than consistent policy-driven agendas.

One of his earliest major political alignments was the Orange Democratic Movement–Kenya (ODM-K), which emerged after the 2005 constitutional referendum fallout. The formation later evolved, contributing to his long-term political base.

In 2013, Kalonzo joined forces with other opposition leaders to form the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD).

The alliance became one of the strongest opposition blocs at the time, bringing together multiple parties under a single political umbrella.

By 2017, he was part of the National Super Alliance (NASA), another major opposition coalition that sought to challenge the ruling party in a tightly contested election. Like CORD, NASA was a broad alliance of political parties united by a common electoral goal.
