HAPPENING NOW: Police Deployed As Nanyuki Residents Stage Protests Against Ebola Quarantine

Security officers were deployed in Nanyuki on Monday, June 1, after residents staged large-scale protests against reported government plans to establish an Ebola quarantine and treatment facility in the area, sparking tension and disruption in parts of the town.WATCH VIDEO HERE.

The demonstrations attracted hundreds of residents who took to the streets carrying placards, tree branches, and chanting slogans opposing the proposed project.

Protesters moved through major streets of Nanyuki, blocking sections of roads and demanding that authorities abandon the planned facility, which they say poses a threat to public safety.

According to eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media, the crowd grew increasingly vocal as residents expressed fears that hosting an Ebola quarantine centre could expose the community to unnecessary health risks and damage the town’s reputation. Many also accused authorities of failing to consult residents before advancing the proposal.

“We do not want the Ebola facility they plan to construct here,” one protester said during the demonstrations, as others echoed chants rejecting the project.

Some residents called on the government to prioritize transparency and public engagement, arguing that communities must be fully informed about the purpose, safety protocols, and containment measures associated with such a high-risk health facility.

The protests later escalated, with reports of confrontations between demonstrators and police officers deployed to restore order.

Security personnel were seen dispersing crowds and attempting to reopen blocked roads as tensions flared in parts of the town. Witnesses described moments of chaos as residents resisted efforts to clear the streets.

By Monday evening, authorities had not issued an official detailed statement addressing the concerns raised by residents or confirming the final status of the proposed quarantine facility.

The lack of communication further fueled anxiety among locals, many of whom continued to demand clarity.

The protests come amid ongoing national debate over Kenya’s preparedness to manage potential Ebola-related emergencies, especially in light of regional outbreaks in parts of Central and East Africa.

Health experts have previously emphasized the importance of isolation facilities in preventing the spread of highly infectious diseases, but such projects often face resistance from communities due to fear and misinformation.

Local leaders are now being urged to intervene and facilitate dialogue between residents and government officials in order to calm tensions and ensure accurate information is shared.
