“We Need One Candidate” — What Sifuna Has Sensed Might Happen If He Declares His Presidential Bid In 2027, Ruto Will Be Happy

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has poured cold water on growing calls for him to declare a presidential bid in the 2027 General Election, insisting that opposition unity is more important than individual political ambitions.

Speaking during a media interview, the ODM Secretary-General suggested that the biggest threat facing the opposition is fragmentation, warning that multiple candidates could hand President William Ruto an easier path to re-election. WATCH FULL VIDEO.

Sifuna's remarks have fueled speculation that he has recognized the political risks associated with an early presidential declaration.

Political observers argue that if every opposition leader pursues personal ambitions, the anti-Ruto vote could be split across several candidates, weakening the chances of defeating the incumbent.

Rather than presenting himself as a contender, Sifuna emphasized the need for a structured and inclusive process to identify a single opposition flagbearer capable of uniting different political camps.

According to the senator, the opposition should focus on selecting a candidate based on leadership qualities rather than popularity alone.

He outlined several attributes he believes are necessary for the country's next leader, including integrity, respect for the rule of law, commitment to fighting corruption, strengthening national cohesion, and protecting independent institutions.

Sifuna also maintained that he would not compromise his political principles by accepting a position within the current administration, insisting that his focus remains on building a stronger opposition movement ahead of 2027.

His comments come at a time when several opposition figures are being mentioned as possible presidential candidates following the changing political landscape.

However, many analysts believe that the opposition's greatest challenge is not necessarily finding a candidate but agreeing on one.

The Nairobi senator further acknowledged President Ruto's political experience, describing him as a formidable campaigner who cannot be defeated by a divided opposition.

He argued that the lessons of previous elections show that unity often matters more than individual popularity.

Political analysts note that Sifuna's decision to avoid an early presidential declaration may be strategic. By prioritizing coalition-building over personal ambition, he positions himself as a team player while keeping future options open.
