Samuel Kibathi: The Kind-hearted Tycoon Who Made Millions Manufacturing Zippers Before Establishing Gretsa University, Sagret Hotels

Few Kenyan entrepreneurs have left behind a legacy as diverse and inspiring as that of Samuel Kibathi. Remembered as a visionary businessman, philanthropist, and education champion, Kibathi rose from extremely humble beginnings to establish successful ventures in manufacturing, hospitality, real estate, and higher education.

His story is not only one of financial success but also of compassion and generosity. Family members and associates often recall his willingness to help those facing hardship, even when there was no financial benefit to him.

One of the most memorable examples involved a family that had lost a nine-acre parcel of land through a public auction.

After purchasing the property legally, Kibathi reportedly returned it to the struggling family without demanding payment or imposing any conditions, an act that cemented his reputation as a kind-hearted businessman.

The names of two of his most famous investments—Gretsa University and Sagret Hotel—carry a special personal meaning. Both were inspired by his deep affection for his wife, Margaret Kibathi.

The names combine elements of Samuel and Margaret, reflecting the partnership that supported much of his entrepreneurial journey.
