Fresh details have emerged surrounding the mysterious death of a Bungoma deputy principal who reportedly collapsed inside a hotel room shortly after checking in with a woman in Webuye town.
The late Caleb Wekesa, who served as deputy principal at St Cecilia Misikhu Girls Secondary School, is said to have complained of sudden illness moments before his condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his tragic death.
According to preliminary police reports, Wekesa and a 28-year-old woman spent the evening of May 23 visiting entertainment spots around Webuye before later booking a room at a local hotel at around 11pm.
Witnesses told investigators that the two appeared normal and calm when they arrived at the hotel. However, events reportedly took a dramatic turn barely an hour later.
At approximately 12:20am, Wekesa allegedly informed the woman he was with that he was suddenly feeling unwell.
Sources familiar with the investigation say the deputy principal began complaining of discomfort and appeared weak within minutes. Alarmed by the situation, the woman reportedly rushed out of the room and called hotel staff for help.
Hotel workers who responded are said to have found Wekesa in critical condition. Efforts were immediately made to save his life as he was rushed to Calvary Hospital before being referred to Webuye Sub-County Hospital for specialised attention.
Sadly, medics confirmed him dead just minutes after arriving at the second facility.
The sudden death has shocked residents, colleagues, students, and family members, especially because Wekesa had reportedly been in good health earlier in the evening.
Police have since launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death, with detectives now treating the matter as a suspected murder pending further forensic analysis and postmortem findings.
The woman who was with him during his final moments has reportedly been taken into custody to assist investigators as detectives attempt to piece together what transpired inside the hotel room.
Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from the entertainment joints and the hotel as part of the ongoing probe.
Meanwhile, the late deputy principal’s widow has painfully broken her silence, revealing the emotional moment she learned her husband had died.
Speaking to local reporters, the devastated woman said they had been married for 20 years and were raising four children together, including their youngest child who is still breastfeeding.
She disclosed that she received a distressing phone call late at night asking her to rush to the hospital urgently because her husband had been taken there in critical condition.
However, before she could arrive, another heartbreaking call came through directing her to the mortuary instead.
The revelation has left many Kenyans online expressing sympathy for the grieving family while also raising questions about the circumstances that led to Wekesa’s sudden death.
