Former UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi has opened up about alleged attempts by President William Ruto to bring him into government, saying he never considered the proposals seriously because he felt they lacked sincerity and respect for professional leadership.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s JKLive on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Kituyi claimed he had been approached multiple times for possible positions in the Kenya Kwanza administration but dismissed the conversations almost immediately.
The seasoned economist said he found the overtures difficult to take seriously, adding that the current administration appears uncomfortable with highly independent professionals who openly express their views.
Kituyi went on to criticize what he described as a growing culture where expertise and intellectual depth are undervalued in government circles.
According to him, technocrats and policy experts struggle to thrive in an environment where political theatrics often receive more attention than competence and experience.
In a sharp political jab, Kituyi referenced former Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u, suggesting his departure from government reflected deeper frustrations among professionals serving in senior state positions.
He argued that individuals with strong academic and policy backgrounds are frequently sidelined when they fail to conform to populist political messaging.
The former presidential hopeful further warned that weakening the role of professionals in governance could negatively affect economic planning, policy consistency, and institutional credibility.
His remarks have already triggered fresh political debate online, with supporters and critics weighing in on the state of leadership, governance, and the place of expertise in Kenya’s political system ahead of the 2027 General Election.
