Form 4 Student Who Died While Trying To Save Colleagues During Utumishi Girls Dormitory Fire Was Preparing To Represent School In Biology Contest

A family in Nakuru County is mourning the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Cecilia Wanjiku, a Form Four student who reportedly died while attempting to rescue fellow students during the deadly fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil.

According to relatives and survivors, Cecilia showed extraordinary courage during the terrifying incident, choosing to help others escape from the burning dormitory moments before the flames spread uncontrollably through the building.

Family members said the young student sustained fatal injuries during the chaos as she reportedly moved from one section of the dormitory trying to assist trapped students.

“She was the kind of child who always cared about other people first. Even in danger, she was still trying to save others,” a grieving relative said.

Cecilia’s death has deeply touched many Kenyans, especially after details emerged about her academic excellence and bright future.

The Form Four student was described as hardworking, disciplined and passionate about science subjects.

According to her family, she scored 399 marks in her KCPE examinations at Gilgil Highway Primary School before joining Karima Girls High School.

She later transferred to Utumishi Girls Senior School, where she reportedly continued performing exceptionally well in class.

Teachers and fellow students described her as one of the top science students in the school, noting that her lowest grade was usually a B+.

Just days before the tragedy, Cecilia had reportedly been selected to represent the school in an upcoming biology contest scheduled to take place at Amref University on June 6.

Friends said she had been excited about the competition and had been preparing extensively in recent weeks.

“She loved biology so much and wanted to pursue a medical-related career after school,” one student recalled emotionally.

Survivors who escaped from the dormitory described Cecilia as calm and courageous during the frightening moments after the fire broke out shortly after midnight.

According to their accounts, the blaze is believed to have started at around 12:10am after students had already gone to sleep.

Panic reportedly erupted after screams from one side of the dormitory woke sleeping students, forcing many to flee in darkness and confusion.

As smoke rapidly filled the building, some students escaped through windows while others reportedly jumped from elevated sections of the dormitory in desperate attempts to survive.

Several survivors claimed Cecilia continued helping others even as panic intensified inside the hostel.

The tragic incident claimed the lives of at least 16 students and left dozens of others injured, triggering national mourning and renewed concerns over school safety standards in Kenya.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing, with detectives exploring multiple possibilities, including suspected arson.

Meanwhile, emotional tributes continue pouring in from students, teachers, parents and leaders who described Cecilia as a selfless and brilliant young girl whose life was cut short too soon.

Her death has become one of the most painful symbols of the tragedy, with many Kenyans praising her bravery during the final moments of her life.
