A 30-year-old Nairobi woman, Tabitha Nafula, has gone public with a heartbreaking account of how her short-lived marriage turned sour after her ex-husband demanded a refund of part of the dowry he had paid to her family.
Tabitha narrated to TUKO.co.ke that she met her now ex-husband, identified as Mark (not his real name), through a mutual friend at church.
He was an usher and appeared quiet, respectful, and spiritual—exactly what she thought she wanted in a life partner.
“I was attracted to his love for church. I believed I had found a man who would lead me spiritually and build a home with strong values,” she said.
Their courtship was brief, lasting just four months. They began dating in August and were married by December of the same year.
During that period, Mark and his family visited Tabitha’s mother in Zimmerman for a traditional introduction ceremony, where he paid a dowry of KSh 10,000.
“My mother was happy and gave us her blessing. She raised me alone after separating from my father, so this meant a lot to her,” Tabitha recounted.
However, what followed left her in disbelief. Just days after the dowry was paid, Mark allegedly asked Tabitha to talk to her mother and request a refund of KSh 6,000 from the dowry, claiming he needed it to design and print their wedding invitation cards.
“He told me to ask my mum to help us with KSh 6,000. I did, and she gave it to us. But I later realized this was actually part of the dowry he had paid,” she said.
Tabitha says that even after four years of marriage, Mark never refunded the money. The incident left her feeling like she had failed her mother.
“Looking back, that was the first red flag I ignored. But I was blinded by love and the excitement of finally getting married.”
The couple later divorced, and Tabitha is now raising their child alone.read more...https://drkashiririka.com/?shorts=worker-wins-ksh500k-after-working-months-without-pay-dances-wildly
