"Why Punish Learners With Disabilities This Way?" Gathoni Wamuchomba Raises Serious Concerns Over This Mess

Githunguri MP Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba has voiced deep outrage over a severe water shortage that has left the Kambui School for the Blind and Deaf without supply, describing it as unfair punishment for vulnerable learners with disabilities.

In a passionate statement, Wamuchomba highlighted that among the 68 schools in Githunguri Constituency, Kambui School stands alone in facing this dire situation.

The disconnection stems from a legacy debt of KSh 215 million accrued since 2014 by the Kiambu County Government, leading Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company to cut off services.

The crisis extends beyond the school, with residents in Githunguri towns and villages enduring no piped water since October 31, 2025. Communities in neighboring areas like Ngochi, Kahunira, and near Ruiru Dam itself lack even basic tap water access.Wamuchomba pointed out the irony: Githunguri hosts the Ruiru Dam, constructed in 1950, which has supplied raw water to Nairobi for decades contributing around 4% of the capital's needsyet locals receive "not even a drop" in return.

Residents have relied on alternative sources like Sasumuwa and Kariminu supplies, which Nairobi Water has now also disconnected. Despite her efforts holding futile meetings and attempting to negotiate reconnection the MP reports no progress.

She criticized the Kiambu County Government for being unresponsive, with promises from the Governor and others amounting to "hot air." "How unfair can this be? Why punish learners with disability this way?"

Wamuchomba questioned. She warned of potential school closures, health risks like cholera outbreaks, or residents enduring extreme hardships just to restore supply. "Seems you only respond to dramatised communication," she added, emphasizing the dire conditions as of now.

This ongoing crisis underscores long standing inequities in water distribution, where host regions for Nairobi's key sources suffer neglect while the capital benefits. Urgent intervention is needed to restore water and protect education for these special-needs students.
