Fresh from Narok Law Courts where he had been arraigned and granted a Sh100,000 cash bail over an alleged assault case, the MP headed back to Kisii, unaware that word of his return had already spread among his supporters.
As his small motorcade approached Kisii town, crowds began gathering along the roadside. The situation escalated at the Kisii Roundabout, where chanting supporters blocked the road and his motorcade, forcing the convoy to slow down and eventually come to a halt.
The crowd, waving hands and shouting political slogans, demanded that the legislator address them. Kibagendi obliged, stepping out of his vehicle as security personnel struggled to control the swelling numbers.
Speaking briefly, the MP accused the government of using state agencies to intimidate and politically frustrate him, terming his arrest and movement between police stations as a witch-hunt.
He then led the crowd in chanting the popular anti-government slogan. “Harambee?” he shouted, to which the crowd responded loudly, “One term,” bringing traffic at the busy roundabout to a standstill.
Kibagendi also used the moment to drum up support for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, whom he praised for what he described as firm leadership during his tenure in the Education and ICT ministries.
Supporters cheered as he spoke, with some escorting the motorcade on foot as it slowly made its way through town.
After the short address, the crowd allowed the MP to proceed home. Kibagendi is one of the few Kisii leaders backing Fred Matiang'i's presidential bid.
