The suspect identified as Lynet Munala was taken into custody following investigations by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations attached to Mlolongo Police Station.
The incident occurred at the family residence in Mlolongo Phase Three, where the woman lived with her husband and children.
Police said the children were found lifeless inside the house after a neighbour was alerted to check on them.
Officers who responded to the scene discovered the bodies of one year old twin girls lying on a bed and their four year old brother in a separate sleeping area.
Preliminary findings indicate that the children may have consumed poisoned food prepared inside the house.
Investigators recovered items believed to contain a toxic substance suspected to have been mixed with porridge.
The scene showed signs of sudden disruption, with food left untouched and household items scattered across the floor.
Residents told investigators that the family had been experiencing ongoing domestic disagreements which may have contributed to the tragic events.
Authorities said the suspect allegedly informed a neighbour to check on the children after the act, prompting an immediate police response.
The bodies were transferred to the City Mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to establish the exact cause of death.
Police confirmed that the suspect is being held at Mlolongo Police Station as detectives finalise investigations ahead of her arraignment.
Law enforcement officials urged members of the public facing emotional or domestic distress to seek professional and community support rather than resorting to violence.
The case has sparked renewed calls for mental health awareness and early intervention in family conflicts as investigations continue.
