NCA Names Developer as Investigations Begin into South C Building Collapse

The National Construction Authority (NCA) has confirmed that a multi-storey building under construction in South C, Nairobi, collapsed after failing to meet regulatory compliance requirements, raising fresh concerns over construction safety in the capital.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, January 2, 2026, along Muhoho Avenue, near South C Shopping Centre and Nairobi South Hospital.

The structure, which was intended to be a mixed-use development, stood on plot number 68/1306 in South C Ward, Lang’ata Sub-County.

In a statement released on Friday morning, the NCA revealed that although the project had been registered with the Authority on November 8, 2023, it was non-compliant at the time of the collapse.

The Authority did not immediately disclose the specific violations but indicated that preliminary findings point to serious regulatory breaches.

The developer and contractor for the project has been identified as Abyan Consulting Limited, a firm registered under the NCA Category 4 for Building Works. According to the Authority, the company’s sole director is Yussuf Mohamed Yussuf.

The project team included architect Gideon Chege Mwangi, structural engineer Peter Kimani Kireru, and quantity surveyor James Kirika Njoroge, all of whom have now come under scrutiny as investigations intensify.

Following the collapse, emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the scene. The NCA said it coordinated with security agencies and rescue teams to secure the site and support ongoing search-and-rescue operations amid fears that people could have been trapped under the debris.

“At the time of issuing this statement, search-and-rescue efforts and site-securing activities were ongoing in coordination with relevant emergency and security agencies,” the Authority said.

Authorities have since cordoned off the area as engineers assess the stability of surrounding structures, while residents and business owners in the vicinity were urged to remain cautious.

The NCA further announced that a detailed investigation is underway to establish the exact cause of the collapse and to determine accountability among all parties involved. A comprehensive report is expected once the inquiry is concluded.

“The Authority reiterates its commitment to safeguarding public safety, ensuring accountability within the construction industry, and upholding the highest standards of professionalism and compliance across all construction projects nationwide,” the statement added.

The South C collapse comes against the backdrop of growing public concern over the safety of buildings under construction in Nairobi, particularly in fast-growing residential and commercial zones.

In recent years, the city has witnessed multiple construction-related incidents, many of which have been linked to poor workmanship, use of substandard materials, and failure to adhere to approved building plans.

Construction industry stakeholders have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of regulations, routine site inspections, and tougher penalties for developers who flout safety standards.
