Naivasha Police Officer Dies by Suicide After Shooting Female Bar Owner

A police officer has died by suicide while a female bar owner remains in critical condition following a shooting incident at a bar in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, January 1, and was reported at Kongoni Police Station by Corporal Bakari Juma, the officer in charge of Kachuma Police Post.

Police officers who rushed to the scene found two people lying outside the pub with serious gunshot injuries.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Corporal Collins Kochei, who was attached to Tangi Tano Police Post under Munanda Police Station in Gilgil Sub-county, allegedly shot Lucy Wanjiru Njoroge, a 34-year-old woman and the owner of the bar.

The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to both breasts and her right thigh.

Police reports further indicate that the officer, who was armed with an AK-47 rifle, later turned the firearm on himself. He reportedly shot himself through the chin, with the bullet exiting through the forehead.

Both the injured woman and the officer were rushed to Nakuru Provincial General Hospital by a good Samaritan. Corporal Kochei was pronounced dead upon arrival, while Ms Njoroge was admitted in critical condition, where she continues to receive treatment.

Senior officers from Kongoni Police Station, together with detectives from the Sub-county Criminal Investigations Office, visited the scene and processed it as part of ongoing investigations.

The body of the deceased officer was transferred to the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Naivasha have launched a probe to establish the circumstances that led to the shooting.

The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns over firearm use, officer welfare, and violent crime involving licensed weapons, as investigations continue.
