Eyewitness Recount Moments Before Crash That Claimed Lives of Seven People at Nakuru-Nairobi Highway

A section of the busy Nakuru-Nairobi highway near Kikopey became the site of a devastating collision on Monday, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals. The early evening accident involved a truck and two passenger minibuses, known locally as matatus.

According to Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Wilstone Mwakio, five victims died at the scene. Two others later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at St. Mary’s Hospital. Several more are reported to be receiving care for various injuries.

Preliminary accounts from eyewitnesses and authorities indicate the crash occurred when a truck, traveling towards Nakuru, veered out of control. It first struck a matatu heading in the opposite direction before colliding with a second minibus.

David Kariuku, a driver in the vicinity, described a chaotic sequence. “The truck hit the first vehicle, then swerved sharply as if mounting an embankment, before crashing head-on into another oncoming matatu,” he stated.
