The announcement was made during an address to residents of Chinga in Othaya after a church service, where the President received a warm reception from locals and leaders alike.
The upgrade of Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital marks a significant milestone for healthcare delivery in the Mt Kenya region.
By granting the facility national referral status, the government aims to strengthen specialised care, attract skilled medical personnel, and decongest existing referral hospitals.
The KES 500 million allocation will go toward modern medical equipment, expanded wards, improved diagnostic services, and better patient support infrastructure, ensuring residents access quality care closer to home.
Beyond healthcare, President Ruto revealed that the national government has invested approximately KES 21 billion in Nyeri County to accelerate socio-economic development.
The funds have been directed toward the construction of modern markets to support small traders, affordable housing projects to address urban accommodation needs, and student hostels to ease pressure on learning institutions.
These initiatives align with the administration’s broader agenda of inclusive growth and equitable development across counties.
Addressing the gathering, the President emphasized that development would not be confined to major cities but extended to every part of the country.
He reiterated his commitment to partnering with county governments to deliver tangible outcomes, particularly in regions with strong agricultural and small business potential like Nyeri.
The event was attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Members of Parliament, and Members of County Assembly.
The presence of top national and county leaders underscored a coordinated approach to development and governance.
Agriculture featured prominently in the discussions, with leaders highlighting ongoing and planned interventions to support farmers through better markets, value addition, and access to inputs.
President William Ruto noted that investments in infrastructure and healthcare complement agricultural reforms by improving livelihoods and social welfare.
